Game Planning: Star Wars Valor
It's that hit idle thought from plurk two months ago, now in "I'm actually doing it" form!
STAR WARS VALOR is a campaign for Valor: The Heroic Roleplaying System that I intend to run over roll20 some time in the near future. Designed to be a timeless alternate-universe piece, it is not set in any particular era or continuity of the Star Wars franchise, but will draw on concepts from many. There are Jedi, noble knights in tune with the mystical energy field called the Force who protect the people of the Galactic Republic from the depredations of criminals, terrorists, and the strange cultists of the Dark Side of the Force. There are true believers in peace and justice and cynical politicians. There are loyal soldiers and criminals who fly on the fringe just to get by. All of them will be swept up in momentous events that will change the future of the galaxy and determine what, exactly, should determine that future. That said, this is not a game that will be faithful to any version of Star Wars canon in terms of continuity. While some characters might be familiar archetypes, there will be no canon characters or events beyond the broad strokes of the setting. Think of this as more of a sandbox where we take the concepts of Star Wars and play around with them than "A Star Wars Story".
(If you need a general sense of technology and sociopolitical situation, though, the prequel trilogy is a good place to start. Or Knights of the Old Republic if you don't get pedantic about personal energy shields.)
WHAT: Star Wars!
WHO: Me and 3-5 players
WHEN: The game will start probably some time this summer and run weekly. The actual timeslot will be determined by the availability of players.
WHERE: Roll20 dot net
WHY: Because I like taking the ideas of very capable filmmakers and putting my own spin on thembecause I disagree with some decisions those very capable filmmakers made.
What to do in this post: Copy the following textarea and reply with the answers, if you're interested. You can also just reply with any questions, if I've left anything unclear.
Valor house rules in play (for nerds who like to know these things before I even ask for character sheets):
-Standard errata and "Valor Discord" house rules which will be provided before the game starts
-The Technique modifier Damage Shift is a +0 modifier (energy weapons and telekinetic hurling of objects being extremely common in this setting)
-The Dark Valor rules on page 111 of the core rulebook are in play for those who choose to draw upon the Dark Side of the Force
-Equipment Flaws, Skills, and Limits on page 116-117 of the core rulebook are in play. They are optional, but encouraged.
-I'm still designing the campaign, so more rules tweaks may happen.
EDIT: Discord channel invite, get it while it's active, I have no idea how Discord works.

Character Concept: Formerly Katin Osea, a Mandalorian mercenary who worked for extremely bad people, until she had a change of heart, abandoned her name and titles, and now works as a Robin Hood-esque criminal and starship pilot known as Argent Starlancer. Still a Mandalorian at heart, but hiding from and trying to make up for her past. No Force abilities, but possibly Force sensitive enough to augment her combat and piloting abilities. Lots of equipment limits - weapons, blasters, jetpacks, everything.
Availability: Monday evenings if it ends before Gundam Valor (so like, between 6 and 10 ET), Thursday evenings (after 6 ET), Saturday days (ending before 7 ET), Sunday evenings (after 7 ET)
Questions: nah
Favorite Starship: Heart of Gold :v

Character Concept: A Sith apprentice who was uplifted out of slavery by the Jedi, only to get increasingly frustrated by their apathy towards the injustices of the galaxy. The Sith Lord du jour whispered into her ear until she decided that acting through evil means was better than doing nothing. Angry rival to her blind Jedi brother, maybe an early antagonist who switches sides? Very open to being seduced by the medium side of the Force.
Availability: Whoof. All times Central US:
Mondays 5-8:30
Saturdays 10-4
Sundays whenever
I think that's it unfortunately
Questions: Would you describe the feeling you have about this as good or bad

Character Concept: A young human padawan with anxiety, possible PTSD, and No Middle Sliders on her mood and mental state. She was discovered by the Order when she accidentally used Force powers as a child, and she's been under intense scrutiny ever since because those powers happened to be Dark Side-related. Earnestly wants to be an idealized zen Jedi, but struggles with her feelings especially because she also resents the Masters for the way they treat her. The apprentice of Eric's character if we're both in it.
Availability: man, fuck, uhhh, I dunno what's gonna be running by the summer. Wednesday or Thursday at 10 PM EST, my Patented Timeslot That Sucks For Absolutely Everyone Else, or mmmmaybe something Friday or Saturday a few hours earlier, I don't know
Questions: eh
Favorite Starship: I'm not gonna count mecha as ships, so

Character Concept: "Red", a former princess of a distant planet in an unfashionable corner of the galaxy. The planet, Vulpecula, was conquered by the Empire with no resistance- Vulpecula is a planet that is all about pacifism. Because in the distant past, Vulpeculans were extremely warlike, to the point where some planets that they didn't like no longer exist.
Red herself, tired of the Empire's tyranny, stole a ship and left to fight the Empire, abandoning her name and title. She's more or less a hedonist now, sure she's going to die in this fight against the Empire, so she wants to have as much fun as she can before she bites it. She's an adrenaline junkie through-and-through, which is unfortunate, because she's also one of the best pilots in the galaxy, recklessly doing terrible stunts for fun.
Dex/Aura sniper build. Absolutely garbage in a melee fight, has zero Force sensitivity, but has the power of guns.
Availability: Basically any time on the weekend.
Questions: nah
Favorite Starship: emily is a jerk who took Heart of Gold already, so i'll take the Bistromath

Character Concept: Human Jedi padawan (name to be determined) away from his master for the first time (unless someone else is playing a Jedi Master I guess, in which case it'll likely just be first mission without the ability to contact the Jedi order or whatever else is decided to explain any lack of backup if things go pear shaped). Pretty naive to the way that the world outside of the Jedi order works in general, and as a normally raised Jedi not all that good with realizing how emotions actually work, because that'll never cause issues with non-Jedi party members or result in problems when emotions get too bottled up at all. Ever. (Spoiler alert: It will almost certainly cause problems).
Availability: Any weekday after 6:00pm-7:00pm EST will generally work for me, though ideally something that ends before 12:00 am EST would be preferred. Weekend days I should also be pretty open.
Questions: Will we be having a session zero, or will things like character relationships and the like be decided online via plurk before we start? Also, I've never played a game using Valor before, which isn't really a question but I figured that'd probably be important to put here.
Favorite Starship: Probably the Prometheus from Stargate

We will be formally arranging details on roll20 after I have the official group, but everyone is more than welcome to use plurk/discord/messenger pigeons for pre-arranging things and brainstorming (which means doing so is probably a good idea).
As for Valor, the good news is that the system is very easy to pick up (except for some of the sheet arithmetic being time-consuming but fortunately roll20 has an API that does it all for you [thanks Quinn]). If you want to pick up a (digital) copy of the book from valorousgames dot com, great, otherwise it shouldn't be too hard to fill you in as we go.

Character Concept: I have one idea I’m too invested in to have a backup for and that’s Jaika Suni, Togrutan Jedi Knight who fell to the dark side for a while before coming to his senses and backing out. He seeks the approval and trust of the understandably wary Jedi order but is also endlessly frustrated by their unwillingness to take a greater effort to protect the common people of the galaxy from Sith, pirates, slavers, etc. Also he was blinded by an explosion while battling his sister who is now a Sith Lord in her own right because she wouldn’t turn back from the dark side. Sees the world through the force. A strength/spirit build who flings people around at range with the force, and then punishes anyone who gets in melee range with brutal lightsaber strikes.

Character Concept: Ressisk Nonar, Nautolan pilot with a jetpack, a blaster, an addictive personality, and a decently hidden smuggler's hold. Enjoys the finer things in life, but is a genuinely good guy. Dex/guts/mind build. Brave and true, smarter than he looks (or acts), and generally a decent fellow.
Availability: Any day before 7 except Sunday. Thursday is 100% open, Monday is open until 9-ish EST.
Questions: Not really any!
Favorite Starship: Probably something ridiculous from 40k, but I'm not picky. They're all cool!
